notes: Since its inception, A Work in Progress has been anchored in contemplation of the shifting relationship between experience and belief, particularly at moments when (a) changes in what we assume to be true (by way of new experience) disrupt the structures of comprehension that hold a given belief in its place, or when (b) new understanding of a given phenomenon augments our experience of that phenomenon through visual or other sensory perception. All the while, a structure of knowledge is formed which acts as a model for anticipation regarding present and future reality. In its brevity, knowledge is necessarily incomplete: always a simplified distillation of experiences that are by their own nature infinite. The act of understanding itself provides the restriction where infinity is lost to our ability to draw boundaries, all in and effort to comprehend. In response, I've tried to allow A Work in Progress to expand continually, recursively absorbing meaning, becoming more and more imbued with continued examination, contemplation and reinterpretation. The project consists of a multi-source video projection into an open gallery, placing shadows into an environment where there is nothing to cast them, and further challenging the bridge between perception and understanding. |
